Minor correction concerning the oil grade. W doesn't stand for "weight" it stands for "Winter" indicating the oil viscosity at 0 degrees c. The second number is the viscosity at 100 degrees c.

Need to do some resto on my Mk2. 5 near front jacking point (thankfully front inner chassis rails taken care of ) at the floor pan near pinch weld. Thanks for this, a few points to add: - If the oil filter is more than hand tight, it is usually because it has been fitted with an oil filter box spanner. This is usually a sign of the previous service being carried out by a garage as they have all the tools and an attitude that "customers don't complain about bolts that are slightly too tight". 68mm across flats and 14 flats/flutes is the spec. for an NB, and they available at good motor accessory stores or on-line. You will also need a 3/8 inch ratchet and socket extension. The benefit of using a filter spanner is that you can fit the new filter into the spanner, with perhaps a bit of paper masking tape to wedge it in. The ratchet extension then can act as a holder to help install the new filter. After the filter has been fitted a bit of wiggling of the extension will release the box spanner from the filter. - If the filter has been done up more than finger tight, then there is a good chance the sump plug has been well tightened and then you do need a new sump plug washer because the old one will have been crushed beyond springback and may not seal. - On models with the VICS Variable Intake system, the inlet manifold has an additional support bracket and nice sharp edged bracket on the front longitudinal for some carbon canister pipework - both of those restrict access. Then the method from underneath past the steering column can make life easier but also it is possible to feed the filter in from underneath the alternator and look down into the gap between the alternator and the block to guide the fillter onto the filter housing thread.

I bought many parts from MX5 and was pleased with all of them except the pattern oil filter supplied by them. When I put it on the car oil poured out all over the drive. The oil seal on the pattern filter failed straight away as it had some grooves in as though the rubber was not shaped correctly. I did not see this when visually inspecting it only after it was fitted did a fine spray of oil come out from underneath. Never had a problem with the genuine filters. I would say be aware of the pattern stuff or check very careful before you put any on the car.

What about a new sump plug washer?

What descaled did you use before you drained the car. How long do you need to leave it in there

NEVER EVER trust a guy in a video who talks about car covers and then drags the car cover all over the ground while putting it on the car. That is the dead wrong way to put a car cover on a car. Watch how this guy puts the cover on the car and then make sure you do the exact opposite. Car covers should be rolled out OVER THE TOP OF THE CAR WITH NO PART OF THE CAR COVER EVER TOUCHING THE GROUND. Follow this guy's video and then wonder why your paint has swirl marks everywhere? It's because he dragged the cover all over the ground and then got dirt particles in it which damaged the paint on the car. Expect him to return and say he's been using a car cover for years and his paint is fine. Doubtful. You NEVER drag a car cover on the ground. NEVER. You only put a car cover on a DRY, freshly washed car. He puts a cover on a wet car. Basically he does nothing right in this video.

Not sure if you reply to these but I saw in a review for the clear rear lights someone said you need to buy a new amber indicator bulb for road legal amber coloured indicators. Is this the case?

Brilliant video! So many other videos on the Tube make this task look difficult, but your clearly expressed step-by-step guide is exactly what is needed. 1989 G-Reg NA used as a daily runner, and still going strong! (Handbrake still a bummer, though, for every MOT!).
